Powell and Mary Surratt on the gallows.   Mary is being lifted to her feet.  Note the sword leaning and perhaps about to fall on the man kneeling before her.  He seems to be tying the cloth bonds at her thighs.   Powell's head is slightly inclined towards her.  It's well documented that he tried to save her life by stating she had nothing to do with the assassination.
