Note that his hair was cropped short at this time, 
perhaps to offer relief from the heat,
or perhaps because after two months in prison, 
his hair had grown to a length that might have
interfered with the hangman's noose.

This photo clearly indicates the emotion Powell felt at this time, 
despite being strong and stalwart throughout his ordeal.  
It was noted that he shed or fought back tears at this time.
